Researchers are experimenting with the next generation of mobile networking, hoping to release 6G within this decade. Is it necessary? Probably not. Is it coming? Yes. So buckle up, here’s what 6G might look like:
5G was about speed. The next leap in connectivity – 6G – will redefine efficiency, lifestyle, and environment – focusing on further immersing the physical with the digital.
What you need to know:
6G will enhance the network changes made by 5G, increasing the performance and connectivity of smart cities, farms, factories, and robotics to unprecedented levels.
6G will introduce groundbreaking new use cases for network connectivity, most notably through the massive deployment of sensors and AI/ML-driven digital twin models.
6G will revolutionize interfaces, making information control more intuitive via gestures and voice. Wearables (and even skin patches) will become mainstream.
Enhanced AI and machine vision will transform wireless cameras into universal sensors, while digital cash and brain-controlled devices will become everyday realities.
6G will improve energy efficiency across industries.
6G networks will require a design overhaul to accommodate burgeoning traffic, device counts, and stringent performance and security standards.
Bottom line:
Brain chips. Dynamic voice recognition. Instantaneous voice-to-chat language translators. Faster connections. Digital cash.
Love it or hate it, this is where tech is headed. There’s one key characteristic missing from this techno-blueprint that we think could not be understated: privacy. How will corporations and governments protect individuals from exploitation, identity theft, and data leaks?
This will be the question of the century, likely to determine whether we ascend into a happy utopia or spiral into a technocratic nightmare.
